Interviews

I thought most of these are well known, but after seeing a few Facebook posts and shares I thought I will write them down. These are by no means complete and as with any advise on the internet, take these with a grain of salt, do your own research on top of this and apply common sense. Also these are about technical job interviews (Software development jobs: developer, testers, automation engineers, project managers, dev ops and the like).  Also these may not apply for entry level jobs (those that need <3 years of experience)

Don’t show desperation even if you are desperate to get a job. This affects a lot of factors right from the pay, the roles you may get and sometimes even your career path. Signs of desperation include statements like:

I am not particular about  a team or role. Even if you are not particular, show some interest. Convey “I will do my best no matter what the role is” in subtle ways.

Answering “Do you have any questions for me” with “When can I join”. This is even worse because this shows that you are not only desperate but also jobless.

A gap in job is by itself not a deal breaker. How you represent it, is. If you say you did freelance work, a course or volunteering, be prepared to substantiate it with examples and data.

As  a general rule be very careful about misrepresenting facts.

No software project is perfect. There are very few software projects that have been successfully delivered in a predictable manner within timelines. Software is not predictable. Everyone knows that. So if you say all my projects have been delivered on time and on budget, either you re lying or you have not done important/complex projects. Same applies when you answer “I will deliver everything on time and within budget” to “Why should I hire you”.

Have an opinion. Even better have a vision. Agreeing with the interviewer on everything is not necessarily a good thing. Even if you agree with everything the other person says, substantiate it with your opinion, examples and facts.

Depending on the interview and the role you are interviewing for, answering “What is your weakness” with your real weakness may actually be an advantage.

“No one does this” you say? I thought so too, till I saw a few posts asking to do these.
